We all love our in-studio practice. A hot room full of energetic and ambitious yogis who are ready to push themselves (and each other!) is our favorite aspect of yoga at EPY, but who’s to say that at-home practices can’t be just as fulfilling?
As much as we love our high-energy classes, we sometimes find ourselves too tired, too busy, or too distracted to reap the benefits of an in-studio class. Evolution Power Yoga has the tools you need to begin incorporating an at-home yoga practice in your routine.
Practice on your own schedule
Life happens, and other obligations and responsibilities may interfere with your studio’s class schedule. The beauty of at-home yoga with EPY is that you can practice wherever and whenever you’d like!
Meg Krofcheck, Evolution yoga teacher, is a frequent user of our live Zoom classes and Evolution GO yoga on-demand.
“I love feeling seen and like I’m still part of the group during a live Zoom class and I love the chance to pick which Evolution GO class I want to take based on a theme or a particular teacher. Having so many at-home options has really changed the way I show up to teach, because it has given me the space to explore my own body and practice so I can take that learning to my students.”
Create a space that works for you
Set the tone for your practice by creating an environment that feels right to you. If you want a high-energy flow, turn on your favorite playlist, brighten the lights, and vinyasa your way through an incredible workout.
If you’re craving a more relaxed flow, light a candle, wrap up in your favorite yoga gear, and surrender yourself to a quiet, meditative state. When you create a space that reflects what you want out of your practice, it’s easier to focus on your intention. This results in a more rewarding practice and can elevate your mood throughout the rest of your day.
Move at your own pace
Our body craves different types of movement everyday. Some days, we’re eager to let go of all the stress and tension from the day through a sweaty, fast-paced workout. Other days, all we need is a low-key stretch session. With an at-home practice, you can incorporate both throughout the week or even within the same workout, all when your body needs it.
Experience high-intensity yoga with our live Zoom classes. An Evolution teacher leads an in-class practice with the video on so at-home yogis can feel connected to the class. My favorite part about these classes is that it truly feels like you’re there with everyone — the teachers are still helping with your alignment and praising you on a job well done. It’s amazing how strong our community’s connection is, regardless of where we are.
If your schedule is tough to coordinate with our live Zoom classes, take advantage of our on-demand yoga platform, Evolution GO. Choose from 5 to 10-minute meditations, 15 to 90-minute vinyasa flows, pose breakdowns, restorative classes, and even prenatal exercises to find the practice that best suits your body.
Build discipline
One of the most challenging aspects of yoga is ignoring the “noise” that goes on in our heads and environments. This becomes even harder when you’re surrounded by TVs, kids, cluttered floors, dirty dishes…. But an at-home practice becomes so much more powerful when you develop the discipline to ignore the distractions and hone in on yourself.
A great way to accomplish a distraction-free at-home practice is to dedicate an area of your home to your practice, such as a spare room or corner of your living space. Turn your phone on silent, your activity watch on “do not disturb,” and let your family know that you’re taking some time for yourself. Your practice will become even more valuable when you eliminate distractions.
How can I start my at-home yoga practice?
Anybody can start an at-home yoga practice — you just have to put your mind to it! Meg Krofcheck gives great advice on how you can begin:
“Be okay with this practice looking different from an in-studio practice. It is not worse nor better than in-studio, it’s just different. Your children are going to run through the room and wave at the camera. Your cat is going to want to lay in the middle of your mat when you want to jump back to low plank. The phone will ring and the dog will bark, but it’s still worth getting on your mat.
So often we hear from teachers that ‘these are tools you take off the mat and into real life,’ and that ‘the way you show up on your mat is the way you show up in life.’ Well, here is your opportunity. Take life exactly as it is and exactly as it isn’t and build the most powerful, accepting and beautiful practice you have ever had.”
