Why 108 Sun Salutations?
The number 108 is sacred in yogic culture because of its repeated significance in such areas as astronomy, theology, ancient Hindu texts, and even the human body. There are also 108 beads on the traditional mala, or Hindu/Buddhist prayer beads, which represents a full, complete circle of divinity.

During the change of seasons, such as the winter solstice, it is a traditional practice to complete a ‘mala’ of 108 Sun Salutations to honor the shifting of seasons as a continuation of the cycle of life. Sun Salutations also represent a complete circle of asana, and by participating in this practice, we also honor our own inner divinity and self-empowerment.

By completing 108 Sun Salutations, we seek to recognize the power within each of us to create lasting change through breath and action, and we dedicate this power to supporting the efforts of the Africa Yoga Project. Through even the smallest actions, we can each impact the world.

Curious Questions:
Do I have to pay to participate in this event?
108 for Africa is a fundraising event for the Africa Yoga Project. For this reason, we request that each participant raise a minimum of $108 to join us in the 108 Sun Salutations. You may choose to find a single sponsor, ask 108 people to each sponsor you for $1 per salutation, or simply make a donation in your own name. However you choose to reach your sponsorship goal, every dollar that is raised will be donated to the Africa Yoga Project with the goal of truly changing the lives of an underprivileged community.

Do I have to do the 108 Sun Salutations if I raise the money?
Completing the 108 Salutations is a significant ritual that has a positive impact on the practitioner. That said, it is completely up to you how you’d like to participate in the event. You may choose to complete all the salutations, just a handful, or simply join us for the event reception afterwards. Alternatively, you can lend your support by joining our Letter-Writing campaign.

What if I’ve never done a Sun Salutation (or even know what one is)?
Our skilled instructors will provide the guidance you need to participate in the Sun Salutations, and you’re free to modify as your own body demands. Yogais not about physical poses. It’s about connecting to a deeper strength within you and not limiting your own possibilities. If you’ve never practiced yoga before, what better place to start than with a supportive group that’s come together for something powerful? There are no expectations to meet and no one to impress—just an opportunity to open yourself to something new.

What if I don’t raise all $108?
To participate in the 108 Salutations, we do ask that you raise the minimum $108 for the event and submit your donations (by February 13th, if possible). However, we value any effort you can make to support the Africa Yoga Project and graciously accept any amount you’d like to donate.
